Fan Lau Country Trail takes you to many historic monuments
and famous sights. Although only 2 km in length,
it takes you back hundreds of years like a time
tunnel.
Fan Lau is so named because it
juts out into Lantau Channel where two contrasting
currents meet: muddy water in the northwest and beryl
clear water in the southeast. Where the currents
merge a sinuous line can be seen.
Fan Lau Village
covers three scenic bays. Tung Wan is exposed to
surging waves and therefore has few villagers. Sai
Wan has a calm beach and most villagers settled there.
Fan Lau Miu Wan is the smallest but has a Tin Hau
Temple by the sea that dates back to the Reign of
Emperor Qian Long (1736-1795).
Atop the Fan Lau
headland is the famous Fan Lau Fort. Earliest accounts
of this military position are from the Ming Dynasty
(1368-1644). The ruins belong to structures built
by Emperor Kongxi in the latter years of his reign
(1722). It is a rectangular structure that ceased
operation in the 1900's. The Fan Lau Lighthouse standing
atop the hill near the Stone Circle is a key navigation
facility that guards the southwestern sea border
of Hong Kong.
