Sheung Yiu Country Trail Information

Sheung Yiu Country Trail begins at the end of Pak Tam Chung Nature Trail. A20-minute walk will take you to the starting point from Tai Mong Tsai Road Many hikers visit the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum and lime kiln before setting off.

Apart from the gentle climb at the beginning section, this trail is a fairly level route. Soon, Hei Tsz Wan comes into view on the right. Farther out are Wong Yi Chau and Yim Tin Tsai, set against the turquoi each of Tsam Chuk Wan. Through the valley, the trail reaches the campsites at Po Kwu Wan and Yuen Ng Fan (Nam Fung Wan) where you can enjoy the dreamy seascapes of Kau Sai Chau and Tai Tau Chau.

Opposite to Nam Fung Wan is a grassy glade. Formerly a Vietnamese refugee camp, the site has been cleared with all cottages demolished. A further walk of 20 minutes to Sai Kung Man Yee Road, where the trail ends, shows the splendid High Island Reservoir.

This Reservoir is the largest one in the territory. Work began in 1971 and the great project took 7 years to complete. It entailed building two dams: the East Dam facing the Pacific Ocean and the West Dam overlooking Port Shelter. The eastern cofferdam was added with more than 7,000 pieces of 25-tonne dolosse units to keep the surging waves from South China Sea at bay.
