Tai Tam Country Trail Information

Tai Tam Country Trail lies in the western part of Tai Tam Country Park. The trail is divided into two sections: Violet Hill and Sir Cecil's Ride.

The Country Trail starts at the main dam of Wong Nai Chung Reservoir. It climbs up the 436m Violet Hill along a small path on the left of the catchwater. This rugged ascent is rather challenging. Hikers are advised to take several breaks along the way. In return, the path gives splendid vistas of Deep Water Bay and Lamma Island in the distance. Beyond the northern slopes, the trail trends down, feasting your eyes with dreamy landscapes of the Tai Tam Reservoirs.

The Tai Tam Group comprises of Tai Tam Reservoir, Tai Tam Intermediate Reservoir and Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir, which were completed in 1889, 1907 and 1917 respectively. They made up the main water source for the Island in Hong Kong's early years. During the Second World War, vegetation of the nearby hills were badly scathed. The evergreen slopes we see today are attributable to dedicated afforestation work.

Across Tai Tam Reservoir Road is another section of Tai Tam Country Park. This section displays a lot of military facilities of the Second World War. It is hard to imagine the bloody battles which took place here all those years ago.
