Beginning near the 4.5 Milestone on Tai Po Road, Eagle's
Nest Nature Trail is a circular route orbiting
around the mid-slopes of Eagle's Nest (Tsim Shan).
The first interesting flora coming into view is
Creeping Psychotria, an epiphytic plant that creeps
on trees and rock surface. Gazing down, you see
an emerald sweep on the right: Kowloon Reservoir.
Completed in 1910, the reservoir was the first
water storage facility in Kowloon. Together with
the nearby Shek Lei Pui Reservoir, Kowloon Reception
Reservoir and Kowloon Byewash Reservoir, it forms
the Kowloon Group of Reservoirs that boast a total
storage capacity of 2.87 million m3.
A little way forward,
the trail passes through some groves of Shiuying
Bamboo, a flora species named after renowned botanist
Dr. Hu Shiuying. Up ahead, in front of a graveyard,
you can look wide across Central New Territories,
where the uplands of Kam Shan, Smugglers' Ridge and
Smugglers' Pass, Tai Mo Shan, Needle Hill and Grassy
Hill roll and billow far into the distance.
This region is
frequented by wild macaques. Visitors are cautioned
not to feed or disturb them. The hill in front is
a famous roosting place of the Black-eared Kite,
which originates the name Eagle's Nest.
