Hung Mui Kuk Nature Trail Information

The entrance to Lion Rock Country Park at Tai Wai is also the starting point of Hung Mui Kuk Nature Trail. Mostly level, this route is suitable for the whole family.

The first stop - Hung Mui Kuk Barbecue Area - features several common native trees. This open space lies on the edge of the city, so traffic noise is sometimes audible, but as you go deeper into the woods, all you can hear is the sweet sound of insects and birds. The insulating effect of trees is evident.

On this trail, you can learn about the symbiotic relationship of algae and fungi, and about the primitive bryophyta. Lion Rock and the surrounding region are granite country. Rock joints and cracks are visible everywhere.

Some distance ahead, the catchment path displays a panorama of Shatin. The precipitous spur in front the highest peak of the region - is the 532m Needle Hill. The last stop is Amah Rock. This famous landmark of Shatin is a tor created by weathering along rock joints. However the scientific explanation will never beat the legend behind it, one that tells of a young woman pining for her husband's return.
