Stage 5 of MacLehose Trail is a popular destination
for hikers, and a treasure-trove of military relics.
From here, you embark on a journey of wartime memories,
with many ruins that mark the chapters of war along
the way. There are 17 wartime ruins along this
section of MacLehose Trail, including military
marker stones, pillboxes, trenches and caves. Most
were constructed by the British military authorities
before the outbreak of WWII in the late 1930s to
defend against attacks from the north. Some of
these installations witnessed actions during the
Japanese invasion, while others were built during
the Japanese occupation period for possible attacks
by the Allied Forces. Interpretation plates with
notes on the structures have been erected for those
relics with special or historical interests.
