This circular walk starts at Picnic Site No. 2, close
to the entrance of Aberdeen Country Park. Walking
along the footpath by the entrance to the Country
Park, and going on the Aberdeen Nature Trail, visitors
are surrounded by superb scenery and varied, interesting
vegetation. The scenic beauty of the Aberdeen Upper
and Lower Reservoirs is best seen from the dam
wall of the higher reservoir. After reaching Stage
2 of the Hong Kong Trail, visitors can turn back
to Peel Rise. This section, with its easy gradients
and gentle green paths, is ideal for families.
Aberdeen Reservoir on Western Hong
Kong Island was planned in the late 1920's to meet
an increasing water demand fueled by population expansion.
Supplying water to the Western District, the reservoir
consists of a purpose-built concrete upper dam and
a lower dam converted from a reservoir that belonged
to a paper mill. In the old days, water was piped
to the Western Water Treatment Works before distribution
to local users after proper treatment. With a capacity
of 1.25 million m3, Aberdeen Reservoir is the latest
water storage facility to have been built on Hong
Kong Island.
