Kap Lung Forest Trail starts at TsuenKamAu, a mountain
pass more than 500m above sea level. If you visit
in early spring, the path is very misty and visibility
is low. Don't worry about getting lost, though,
for the entrance to the trail lies just ahead.
Soon you will see the direction sign and map.
Kap Lung Forest
Trail offers interesting nature information and food
forthought. This is primarily a down hill route but
some sections are physical demanding. It is therefore
suitable only for fit hikers.
The route meanders
through plantations inside Tai Lam Country Park.
Afforestation work started in the 1950's. In the
early years most plantation employed single tree
species, and most of the chosen species were fast
growing exotic trees that can adapt to poor soil.
It was not until the late 1980's that mixed forests
were created by planting a variety of trees together.
Trees that were selected for mixed planting include
Swamp Mahogany, Brisbane Box, Taiwan Acacia, Horsetail
Tree and native species like Machilus, Castanopsis,
Schima, Pond Spice, Hong Kong Gordonia, Ivy Tree,
Chinese Banyan and China Fir. Native plants can provide
diverse food sources and habitats for wild animals,
which in turn will enhance Hong Kong's biodiversity.
