The trail begins along Pok Fu Lam Family Walk, which
starts at the Pok Fu Lam Management Centre. The
Pok Fu Lam Family Walk goes around the middle slopes
of High West, and then back to Pok Fu Lam Reservoir
Road. Much of the Family Walk is almost level,
so allowing visitors to proceed in leisure amidst
the greenery. The walk up to The Peak is quite
strenuous, but once you get up your tiredness is
swept away by the magnificent scenery.
In Hong Kong, the
lack of natural fresh water sources has always been
a constraint. In the early years, hill streams and
wells were main sources for potable water, and in
the 1850's, the government even offered monetary
rewards for new water solutions. Pokfulam Reservoir
was designed in total concord with the topography
of the valley in which it lies. Completed in 1863,
it was the first water storage facility in Hong Kong.
