Starting from Pineapple Dam, the southern dam of Shing
Mun Reservoir, this hike is suitable for light
pleasant walking and it is all clearly signposted.
Climbing up the steps from the minibus stop, visitors
arrive at Shing Mun Country Park Visitor Centre
-with its interesting displays of various aspects
of the area. Continuing, along the Pineapple Dam
Nature Trail, there are on-site interpretative
signs - with information about local ecology, plants
and animals. There are also several picnic sites,
hidden away amidst the attractive woodland. There
is pleasant spacious grassland at the entrance
of Lung Mun Country Trail, with pavilions and picnic
sites. From here you can follow the woodland path
to a junction, then turn left and walk downhill
back to Pineapple Dam.
This trail is short
and mostly level, suitable for families to enjoy
together. Shung Mun was once a region of rich mineral
reserves. In the past, Lead Mine Pass produced galena
which was an ingredient for lowering the pureness
of coins. In the early 1920's, rich wolfram was discovered
in Needle Hill and mining began in 1926. During the
peak years, about 2,000 miners worked in Needle Hill.
In 1967, the mines were shut down due to sharp fall
in ore prices and escalating wages.
